How to Make Money as a Pet Sitter
How to Make Money as a Pet Sitter As a pet sitter since the age of 10, Iâve taken care of everything from dogs to cats to gerbils to guinea pigs, and have pet sat at many gorgeous homes with fabulous amenities. One client I worked with even lived right down the street from Oprah! Not a bad way to earn some extra cash, am I right? Here are six steps to making $400+ a week in your spare time as a pet sitter. 1. Set Your Services and Prices Pet sitters can offer a variety of services, from dog walking to daycare, daily check-ins, baths, overnight services, and more. When determining which services you will offer, think about your what kinds of pets you are comfortable with as well as how much time you have to spend pet sitting. You wonât want to offer dog walking services if you arenât comfortable walking large dogs, and you wonât want to offer daycare services if you have a full-time job. Youâll also need to research how much pet sitters in your area charge for the same services you want to offer in order to figure out how much you should charge. Donât price yourself too high or too low. Be competitive for your city! For example, in Newport Beach, CA, I priced my services at $60 per night for overnight sitting and $20 per day for daily check-ins. One week of overnight sitting earns me $420, and if Iâm able to add in a drop-in client or two, I can earn upwards of $560 per week. Read More: 16 Festive Ways to Make Extra Money for the Holidays 2. Advertise If this is your first time pet sitting, start with your family and friends. Offer to watch their pets for a discounted fee so that you can build up your portfolio and reference list. Be sure to ask them for referrals as well! Another option to find clients is the Internet. A site like Sitting for a Cause (which, full disclosure, I own and operate) can help pet parents in your area find you and learn about the services you offer. You can also create your own website or make a Facebook page to help people find you. Additionally, you can make business cards and leave them under peopleâs doormats or post fliers at local dog parks, shelters, or pet supply stores. Leaving your information where pet owners will see it can help you grow your business. 3. Meet Clients in Person When a prospective client contacts you, find out the details of the job including the type of service they need, the dates of service, and information about their pets. If the job sounds like something that will fit into your schedule, set up a meet and greet! A meet and greet is your opportunity to meet the client and pets as well as learn more about what would be expected of you while the client is away. Along with the basic information like feeding schedules, exercise and bathroom needs, medical history, and location of all pet supplies, be sure to find out: How well trained the pet is and any commands he or she knows; If the pet is good with other animals; Behaviors you should reward for and bad behaviors you should watch out for; Information about people who will be coming and going from the house (i.e. housekeepers, gardeners, and pool cleaners); If you need to water plants, pick up newspapers, or bring in mail; How to arm and disarm any alarm systems. If you feel confident a job is a good fit and you can handle all the responsibilities that come with it, accept it! If not, itâs always okay to turn down a job. Feed pets when they are supposed to be fed the exact amount they are supposed to be fed, keep water bowls filled, make sure pets get the exercise they need, scoop litter boxes daily, clean cages as required, pick up poop from the yard, give treats as suggested, bring in the mail and newspapers, water plants as needed, and follow any other instructions from the client. And, obviously, spend lots of time playing and cuddling with their pets. You were hired to be a surrogate parent while your client is gone, so enjoy your temporary parenthood! 5. Go Above and Beyond During your job, do more than just the basics. Here are some ideas to help you go the extra mile to make your clients happy: Send updates and pictures; Notify them if their food supply seems low and offer to run to the store to pick some up; If a favorite pet toy looks like itâs falling apart, get a replacement; If your client is celebrating a special occasion, leave some pet-safe flowers and a nice note; Leave the house in cleaner condition than it was when you arrived on your first day. When you go above and beyond, donât expect or ask for reimbursement from clients on items you purchased for them. Going above and beyond is an investment in your client and will keep them hiring you for years to come. Read More: 6 Ways to Make the Most of Your Morning Commute 6. Follow Up On the final day of the job, if you leave a clientâs house before they return, call or send them a text a few hours after they were supposed to return (or if they returned late, the next morning) to ensure they are home with their pets. They will appreciate knowing you care enough to check in. Itâs also nice to check in with clients from time to time. A quick email every so often asking how their pets are doing or sending a Christmas card is always a nice gesture that will keep you at the top of their list of people to call the next time they need a sitter. It also increases the odds they will refer their family and friends to you!

Is an Interview No Always the Last Word
Is an Interview No Always the Last WordIf youve ever been turned down for a job you desperately wanted, you know how disheartening that can be. You probably just want to walk away, go home, curl up in your bed, and pull the covers over your head. Before you do that, consider the possibility that you may just be able to change the hiring managers mind.Robert Hellman is a career coach with Five Oclock Club, and a teaczu sich at New York University. In Forbes magazine, Hellmann refers to his first clienta woman who was in line for a sales director location. She had three vorstellungsgesprchs, and thought shed nailed the job. The final interview was with the companys Executive VP, and it all fell to pieces when she asked the executive if he had any issues with her candidacy. It turned out he did she had people skills, but not the data analysis experience the position would require.Turning It AroundHellmans client left the interview in shock shed assumed the job was hers. Even after the d oor closes, though, its sometimes left open just a crack. Hellman advised her that even after youve blown it, you should still take time to write to your interviewernot a thanks for the interview note, but what he refers to as an influence letter. In it you can describe how youve faced various job challenges. And at the same time, you can also do some damage control. Hellmans client used the influence letter to ask for a set of data to analyze. The VP complied, albeit reluctantly, and three days later she sent him a complete analysis and a request for an appointment to discuss the results. At their next meeting, the VP was considerably more enthusiastic. There was, however, another candidate who was in the running, and had a bit of an edge. So, she went home and wrote another influence letter, describing specific examples from other jobs where shed shown outstanding leadership and had motivated her team to excel and surpass sales goals. The OutcomeHellmans candidate ended up getting t he job. Granted, its not going to happen every time, but if youve blown an interview, dont necessarily assume that all is lost. If you keep the channels of communication open, and take every opportunity to emphasize your skills, you may find that a no can turn into a maybe, and ultimately even a yes.Has there been a time when you turned a NO around and into a YES Id love to hear about it please feel free to share it with me by commenting below or by connecting with me on LinkedIn.

The Real Story Behind My Overnight Career Success
The Real Story Behind My Overnight Career SuccessThe Real Story Behind My Overnight Career SuccessMy career trajectory in the past 12 months has gotten a little nuts (in the best possible way). Over a year ago, I applied for a Teen Vogue gig I saw online.A lot of you people reading this may or may not know, but Teen Vogue has kind of exploded since December 2016, and lots of people from all demographics and generations are reading it now.The question I get asked constantly is how I ended up in such an enviable position. I think a lot of people believe that by recreating my steps, theyll somehow end up in the exact same place or that theres some secret sauce involved in the whole thing. However, I can assure you that theres not really anything wowza about this sauce. Here are the three biggest things you can take away from my story1. I Got LuckyThis section is the shortest because, quite frankly, its the most boring.A little over a year ago, I saw a job listing for a freelance writer po sition for the site, I applied, and I got it. My editor later told me that shed been inundated with applications and picked two at random. Guess which lucky lady welches one of those two?My mother says that sometimes God gives you a free one. This was just that.2. I Worked Incredibly HardWomen have a tendency to downplay their accomplishments, so I wont downplay mine here Once I got the job at Teen Vogue, I worked my ass off.I take virtually every assignment, and if I dont, theres usually a very good reason why. I write at superhuman speeds, Im reliable, and I learn quickly. I wrote almost 500 articles in my first year- you dont get to that point by just sitting around.Personally, I also feel like I caught a second lucky break within the lucky break, because although I was technically hired as a tech writer for the site, I wrote all kinds of lifestyle and news coverage, including politics. Once again, I happened to be in the right place at the right time in November when Trump was e lected president Id covered politics for the site previously, and this was a time when there was a need for people who could write on the topic. I then worked really hard once the opportunity presented itself. My experience has been a confirmation of the fact that lucky breaks are great, but the easy ride ends there. Ive had to earn my stripes every day and at every other publication Ive written for and/or write for now.Again, I apologize for the lack of secret sauce here. I wish I had something flashier to say.3. I Worked Incredibly Hard Long Before Teen VogueWhile there were elements of luck into getting the position, followed by pure grit as I ran with the opportunity, Teen Vogue certainly wasnt my first time putting pen to paper (er, cursor to Microsoft Word). (If you want to hear more about my writing experiences, you can check out my longer Medium post on that as well as my LinkedIn.) Heres the long story short I wrote over 1,000 pieces of published content during my four years of college about virtually every topic under the sun. I built several successful blogs during that time and learned about editorial strategy, social media distribution, schmelzglas marketing, headline writing, networking within the industry, and so much more.Am I an expert at any of those things? Of course not. But all of these experiences made me much more confident in my abilities, so that when an opportunity like Teen Vogue came along (and then subsequently took off into the stratosphere while I just happened to be clinging onto the spaceship for dear life by a single pinky finger), I was prepared to go along with it.The bottom line is this Whether you believe in the 10,000-hour rule or not, I put in my 10,000 hours. Every opportunity prepares you for what comes next, and I can say without a doubt that I wouldnt have been able to handle whats happened from writing for Teen Vogue if not for the blood (yes, I once cut my finger on my laptop), sweat, and tears that came from the ye ars before that.Great opportunities require sacrifice, and they hardly line up perfectly with whats going on in your life. So when they present themselves, dive in, forgo some sleep, and do as much as you can (without burning out). This article was originally published on Medium. Keep business cards on hand even if youre not attending a job search-focused event.Networking can happen anywhereYou might meet helpful contacts during parties, on trips, or at other social events. Before you leave an event or end a conversation, hand out your business card and express your wish to keep in touch. This will often eingabeaufforderung people to reciprocate by sharing their own business card, too. Having a business card available helps you appear professional and prepared. Plus, unlike a resume, its easy to carry business cards around at all times. Read on to find out more about what information to have on your business card, as well as where to get them. What to Include on Your Business Card Todays job seekers have the opportunity to present more than just the basic contact information traditionally included with business cards. A business card provided by your employer will include your name, job title, employer, phone number, and email address. For your own personal business card, you can leave off your job title and employer. Instead, of a job title, include a broad description of your work, such as writer, accountant, marketing professional, designer, etc. If you use a two-sided card, you will be able to include additional information and avoid cluttering the front of the card. Be Sure to Include Links Incorporating the address of yourLinkedIn Profileprovides the opportunity to showcase accomplishments and recommendations. A link to a business-orientedpersonal websitecan also convey professional information. For many career fields, a link to a portfolio site can be an effective way to showcase designs, writing, or other projects which will prove to prospective employers that you have the right stuff for your target job. Whichever link you choose to include on your business card, make aya its short and easy to type into a browser. Consider Adding a Tag Line Some job seekers include a tagline on the second side of their card like A technology consultant with a cutting-edge grasp of networking strategies and a proven record of completing projects on time and within budget. Others will use the back side of the card to list three to five key skills or knowledge assets which they offer to employers. Think of your tagline or top skills as being like your elevator speech. You want to share a quick look at your skills and background, and help people remember you once theyre back in the office after an event. Design Tips for Business Cards Its a good idea to use a template or hire a professional designer for your business card. Most sites that print business cards have templates available. Here are a few design guidel ines to keep in mind Leave Plenty of White Space There is a lot of information you can include, but its important not to clutter your card. Leave plenty of white space, so its easy to read. Think about what information will present your candidacy fruchtwein effectively before you start designing a business card. Consider a Headshot While its generally not recommended to include a photo on your resume, it is appropriate to include your photo on your business card. The decision is up to you, but note that including a photo may help people recall your conversation later on (faces can be easier to remember than names). Just be sure to use a professional image the photo you use for your LinkedIn profile is a great option. Keep the Design Clean and Simple Opt for a standard font, and avoid using several fonts on your business card. Use a reasonable, readable font size - too small, and people will have difficulty reading your business card. QR Codes on Business Cards You can also include a QR code which can be scanned by a smartphone and is linked to a website URL so the viewer can get more information. Where to Get Business Cards There are plenty of low-cost, even free, options for getting business cards printed. Some of the most popular online options for low-cost business cards are Moo, Zazzle, Overnight Prints, and Vistaprint. Most companies offer templates, which help steer you through the process and ensure that you wind up with a readable, well-designed option. You can also use Canvas free business card maker to design your own card. Google free business cards for a list of companies that will give you free cards, but be aware there may be a fee for shipping and for add-ons. You can also find free templates online. Another option is retail stores like Staples where you can get help with the design as well as printing.

The One Science-Backed Way to Improve Your Career, Health, Happiness
The One Science-Backed Way to Improve Your Career, Health, HappinessThe One Science-Backed Way to Improve Your Career, Health, Happiness Weve all seen advertisements for miracle cures before pop-up windows or magazine inserts that claim Cure found This man has discovered the secret to a longer life , or This one weird trick can earn you $100,000 More often than not, those ads are peddling dubious herbal supplements or a self-help program. Given this, its understandable that we as a society are skeptical of anything that seems too good to be true. But in the world of psychology, one practice is turning cynics into believers with its amazing results mindfulness. While its not exactly a quick, easy fix for every problem in your life, it has proven effective in a wide range of contexts, from treating wirtschaftskrise to losing weight to improving sleep and much, much more. So what exactly is this wonder practice? Mindfulness is awareness that comes from payi ng very close attention to what we are experiencing in the present moment, both internally and out in the world. It means being aware of what we are doing, while we are doing it, and also what is going on mentally and emotionally, says Clinical Psychologist and Certified Success Coach Dr. Sam Von Reiche . When we are in a mindful state, we are compassionate observers of what goes on within and around us. We notice without applying labels and judgments. People tend to experience various kinds of fear based on compulsive thinking about the past and projections about the future . Being in the moment liberates people from these fears and allows them to live life more authentically, creatively, and productively. When practiced with regularity, mindfulness can (literally) reshape your brain so that you have more activity in areas associated with decision-making, focus, and memory, among others - and that can directly translate to gains in your career, both short-term and long-term.No matter what your career goals are, odds are that mindfulness can be helpful in one way or another. For example, in a hyper-connected, always-on world, Mindfulness is an antidote to the constant pull of distraction, says Gayle groraumlimousine Gils, Certified Mindful Leadership Teacher and author of Happier at Work The Power of Love to Transform the Workplace . We are bombarded with information and opportunities to be pulled away from the task at hand. When we develop the ability to focus - bring our attention back to the task we are engaged with - our productivity and satisfaction with work will increase. It can also help reduce stress , by allowing you to deal with issues rather than ruminate on projected scenarios in our head, Van Gils adds. While stress is caused by many factors, incessant and unnecessary worry can be interrupted whenever we remember to return our attention to what is actually happening rather than what we fear will happen.Trying to push yourself to think outside the box? Mindfulness can help with that too. Mindfulness leads to creative problem solving because you take the time to allow new solutions to incubate, rather than simply applying stale mental patterns and expectations from the past to new situations, Von Reiche shares. This also creates greater adaptability (accepting reality in the moment and formulating the best solutions) which is a strong predictor of leadership ability and career success. One of the great things about mindfulness is that when you mindfully conduct yourself, the long-term effects accumulate, says Dr. Amanda Gale-Bando, licensed psychologist. The end result? You are viewed as clear-headed, in control, productive and attentive. You become an authority on whatever task is in front of you, and others notice. These characteristics are vital to building a reputation supporting your forward career movement. While remaining present in the moment may seem easy, mindfulness requires a good deal of determinatio n and dedication. Its actually quite difficult when you understand that the average person has between 20-50,000 thoughts go through their mind in an average day. In fact, the latest research shows that we are NOT in the present moment 46.9% of our day - thats over 7 1/2 hours in a 16-hour waking day says Robin Todd M.S., Owner of mindful momentum . But dont let that intimidate you too much. While reaching peak mindfulness can take years of practice, there are a number of simple exercises you can start doing today that will allow you to begin reaping some of the benefits of mindfulness almost immediately. Try a few of the following exercises on for size Dont worry if you have trouble with these exercises at first - as with almost everything, practice makes perfect. If your mind wanders, that is always okay because that is what minds do. In fact, it gives you a chance to practice a repand further strengthen your mindfulness muscle. Whenever you become aware that your mind has wan dered, very gently bring your attention back to your intended focus, repeatedly, however many times is necessary, Gale-Bando recommends. So the next time you start to feel those worries start to rise or your productivity slow down, relax. Take a breath. Notice where you are, and what youre feeling. Youll feel better in the moment - but perhaps even more importantly, youll set yourself down the path of a happier, healthier future.
